Vaelastrasz: Burning Adrenaline and the enrage race

Vaelastrasz is the second boss in Blackwing Lair and a pure damage race. He gives your raid a huge damage and rage buff, then kills himself and you on a timer. You either burn him down in time or the whole raid dies. Here is how the race works.

The buff and the clock

At the start, Vael hands the raid Essence of the Red, which floods you with mana, energy, and rage so you can attack at full speed without running dry. The trade is a clock: Vael loses health on his own and hits harder over time, and if you are too slow he wipes you. From the pull, every second is damage.

Burning Adrenaline

The mechanic that catches people is Burning Adrenaline. Vael puts it on a random player, and that player will explode in a few seconds for damage that kills them and anyone nearby. When you get it, run out of the raid and die away from the group. Healers do not waste mana trying to save them, the death is part of the plan. The current main tank also takes Burning Adrenaline on a timer and dies to it, so you swap to a fresh tank when it lands.

Tanks

You need at least two or three tanks lined up. The active tank holds Vael until Burning Adrenaline kills them, then the next tank takes over with threat already built. Have the tank order called out before the pull so nobody hesitates on the swap.

How to run it

  • Spread out enough that a Burning Adrenaline explosion only kills the one player who has it.
  • Everyone attacks from the first second. There is no ramp, no holding back for threat past the tank’s lead.
  • Accept the planned deaths. People will die to Burning Adrenaline every attempt, and that is fine as long as Vael dies first.

Why guilds wipe here

Almost always it is slow damage or a panicked Burning Adrenaline. If your raid is geared from Molten Core and everyone presses from the start, the clock is generous. If half the raid plays it safe, you lose the race. Tell people plainly: this fight rewards going all out, not playing careful.
