Razorgore the Untamed: the orb, the eggs, and add control

Razorgore is the first boss in Blackwing Lair and the one that ends the most pug attempts. It is not a gear check. It is a job nobody has done before, so the first night is messy and cleaner attempts come once people learn their spot.

The setup

One player takes control of Razorgore by clicking the orb in the room. While controlled, Razorgore can destroy the dragon eggs scattered around the floor, and destroying every egg is how you finish phase one. Meanwhile the rest of the raid has to keep that controller alive and hold the room, as waves of adds pour in.

The two jobs

  • The controller drives Razorgore from the orb and works through the eggs as fast as the room allows. They are not watching their own health, so others are.
  • Everyone else holds the adds. Orcs, dragonkin, and casters spawn in waves from the doorways. Tanks pick up the melee, casters and ranged handle the rest, and a couple of people guard the orb so the controller is never overrun.

Where it goes wrong

  • Adds reach the controller and the orb breaks, which ends the control and resets the egg progress. Guard the orb like it is the boss.
  • The raid spreads too thin chasing adds instead of holding chokepoints. Tank the waves at the doors, do not freelance across the room.
  • People burn cooldowns too early and have nothing left for the second phase, when Razorgore turns on you directly after the eggs are gone.

Phase two

Once every egg is destroyed, control ends and Razorgore attacks the raid as a normal boss with a knockback and a fire breath. The tank holds him away from the raid, casters and healers spread so the knockback does not throw the group into adds, and you burn him down. After the egg phase this part is short.

The one thing to drill

Assign the orb guards and the controller before you pull, and tell the controller to call out when they are taking heat. A protected orb is the whole fight. With the orb held, the rest of Razorgore is manageable.
